JERUSALEM (AP) — Ehud Olmert’s political opponents demanded his resignation Friday, saying new allegations that the Israeli prime minister illegally accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars from a U.S. citizen render him unfit for the country’s top job.
Ehud Olmert gestures at an event marking the 60th anniversary of the creation of Israel on Friday.
Reading a statement on national television Thursday, Olmert said he would resign only if formally indicted. He denied any wrongdoing in the case, which could force him from office and derail fragile peace talks with the Palestinians.
“I am looking all of you in the eye, and I say I never took bribes; I never took a penny for myself,” he said.
But some Israeli lawmakers critical of Olmert said the new police investigation — the fifth opened into the prime minister’s activities since he took office in 2006 — was reason enough for him to leave office.

The Harbhajan Singh, Sreesanth slapgate issue has dogged the world of cricket, making headlines around the world. The BCCI hearing on Bhajji-Sree has ended in Ahmedabad. Sudhir Nanavati, BCCI-appointed Commissioner has been probing the slapping row involving Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth. Post hearing, Nanavati will now be wrapping up the investigation on the case.
Sources have said that the meeting with Harbhajan Singh was a bit longer, where he admitted to his mistake and sought one more chance of not repeating it ever on the field. Harbhajan pleaded guilty and appealed to the BCCI to be granted with one more oportunity. Harbhajan’s hearing lasted for about an hour while Sreesanth’s hearing lasted for half an hour.
BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah quoted, “Both Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth have made their statements before the Board. The final assessment of both their statements will be presented to Sharad Pawar, and the concluding decision is to be reviewed by the disciplinary committee.”
